The Songs of Your Life 4: This week as we look at a hymn of praise to God. This is a noisy Psalm complete with singing, shouts of joy, and a full band providing music. Indeed the whole creation joins in praising God for his salvation and his purposes for the world. There is much for us to celebrate as the Psalm proclaims God’s eternal purpose of bringing all things under the Lordship of Jesus.

Sermon: Song of Purpose

Passage: Psalm 96

Preacher: Jon Blyth

First Bible Reading: Ephesians 1:3-10 (p.1173)

Second Bible Reading: Psalm 98 (p.603)

Outline:

1. Sing to the Lord

2. Shout for joy

3. Let all creation praise him

Front cover: Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come and has redeemed his people. Luke 1:68 NIV

The Songs of Your Life 3: As we’ve ventured into the Psalms over the last two weeks we’ve heard of God’s great plans in creation, and how they’ve been threatened by human sin. Today we begin to see how God has not left us alone in this broken world, but has continued to make himself known and to act for our salvation. As we listen to the writer of Psalm 119 we hear of the goodness of God’s Word that is a constant companion through all the ups and downs of the course of our lives.

Sermon: Song of Scripture

Passage: Psalm 119

Preacher: Jon Blyth

First Bible Reading: 2 Peter 1:1-11 (p.1222)

Second Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-24 (p.617)

Outline:

Getting our bearings

Reasons to delight

Finding joy in God’s word

Front cover: Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right. The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. Psalm 119:137-138 NIV

The Songs of Your Life 2: Even amidst the praise of Israel there is a recognition of sin. For there can be no true worship in a broken world, without confession. Psalm 106 recognises the brokenness of this world, the reality of our rebellion from God. Ever since the first human beings decided to go their own way, the purpose for which God made this world – worship, has been thwarted by human unbelief and idolatry. To find our place in God’s plans, we start by recognising the reality of sin.

Sermon: Song of Brokenness

Passage: Psalm 106

Preacher: Sandy McMillan

First Bible Reading: Romans 3:9-20 (p.1130)

Second Bible Reading: Psalm 106 (p.608)

Outline:

Worship: Our reason to live

Wickedness: Our rebellion from God

Wanted: Our recognition of sin

Front cover: “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:23-24 NIV

New series – The Songs of Your Life: The book of Psalms was the hymnbook of Israel. The people of God would join their voices in singing God’s praise. So these songs reflect deep and important truths about God, truths about his plans and purposes for the world. Psalm 148 calls all creation to join in worship, because God made the world and has revealed himself in his world, even sending a Saviour so we could know him. God’s purpose for the world he made is that we should know him, enjoy him, glorify him.

The call for all creation to worship

The reasons for all creation to worship

The goal of all creation is worship

Sermon: “When God Comes to Judge”

Passage: Nahum 2-3

Preacher: Jon Blyth

First Bible Reading: Nahum 2 (p.938)

Second Bible Reading: Nahum 3 (p.938)

Summary: This Sunday we continue our adventure into the little known book of Nahum. During a time of great oppression for Israel, the prophet Nahum received a vision of God. In this vision Nahum saw that God would soon come in judgment on the evil nation of Assyria by overthrowing its capital Nineveh. This act of judgment is at the same time God’s act of salvation for Israel, as in this event we see both the justice and the mercy of God.

Outline:

Destruction for Nineveh

Restoration for Israel

Judgment and us?

Front cover: The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him. Psalm 37:39-40 NIV
