Bible Time

  • Introduce the book of Ecclesiastes to the kids. Written, we think, by Solomon, King David’s son.  Reflects on what life is like.
  • Draw 4 boxes on the board and label with the seasons. Ask the kids what they like / don’t like about each time of year, or what is distinctive about each season.
  • Ask the kids what they think causes the seasons. (A: Orbit of earth around the sun changing solar elevation…)
  • Chat about whether seasons are good or bad.
  • Read Eccl. 3:1-8. together. Explain any tricky words or ideas.
  • Discuss whether the kids have noticed these different times in their lives (note: some things will be confronting, like death, killing and war)
  • Emphasise that in God’s wisdom, He’s made seasons part of the created order (Genesis 1:14)

Pray

  • Praise God for His wisdom, providence and power.
  • Ask for wisdom in knowing how to live in our appointed time.
  • Pray for steadfast hope of eternity without hard times.

Stretch Game:

“Pass the beat around the room” (timeliness, again). Sitting in a circle, all clap at a moderate pace while each person in turn says one word of the phrase “Pass-the-beat-a-round-the-room-(pause)”.  People are muted if they make a mistake. The phrase that would have ben theirs is skipped and the next person speaks their phrase on the next beat.

Mark 4:1-20 (Parable of the Sower), but focus on 26-29 (Growing Seed) & 30-32 (Mustard Seed)

Both or these show something getting bigger:

Either: Empires (introduced last week, so it would be good to remind how to play)

Or: Shopping List (Could be called something else…) In a circle, start by saying “I went to the shops and I bought a ____”The next person says “I went to the shop and I bought a (previous thing) and a _____’ The game progresses until someone forgets / makes a mistake”

Bible Time

  • Ask the kids to line up in height order.  Point out that they may have been further toward the smaller end last year. i.e. they are growing.
  • Introduce the idea that God’s kingdom grows.
  • Read Mark 4:26-29 together. Point out that Jesus is talking about God’s Kingdom.
  • Discuss what the kids think is interesting or important, being sure to mention that the Kingdom grows despite what people do, and that growth leads to fruitfulness
  • Read Mark 4:30-32 together.
  • Discuss what the kids think is interesting or important. Be sure to mention that the kingdom is getting bigger and bigger.  The ‘bigness’ is twofold: more numerous and more influential.
  • You might mention places like China where there are more than 80 million Christians.
  • Finish by challenging the kids to have God’s kingdom grow in their lives through obeying the King!

Pray

  • Confess that we don’t always listen to the King

God forgives us

Key Bible Passages

Titus 3

Welcome

Arrive, sit on the mat, mark the roll

Song

“The Hello Song” from J is for Jesus, “Titus 3:5″ (both on Kidschurch CD for July 2012)

Bible Time

  • Remind the kids about last week, that Jesus tells us the best way to live
  • Ask the kids about their achievements: best school results, sporting achievements, clever things they can do like rolling their tongue…
  • Explore whether those things make God love us more, or even how good we’d have to be to make God love us.
  • Listen to Titus 3:5 song again.  Ask the kids if they can remember any of the words.  Write the whole verse on the board: “God… saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”
  • Explain that nothing we could do could save us, but we need ‘mercy’. Explain what ‘Mercy’ means.
  • Encourage the kids that God loves them and is kind!

Pray

  • Confess that we don’t always get it right
  • Praise God that he forgives us, because Jesus died for us
  • Ask God to help us live lives which please him

Craft

Try teaching Titus 3:5 as a memory verse.  Use a puzzle background to make a puzzle of the verse.  Say the verse together. Remove piece by piece until kids can say it without any of the verse in front of them.

Distribute a copy of the puzzle to each child to colour-in, then cut out and take home.
